What is acute myelogenous leukemia?

Leukemia is a term used to describe a number of different forms of cancer that share similar physiological and pathological characteristics. What makes these diseases so similar is the fact that they tend to affect the white blood cells of the human body.

The white blood cells in the bone marrow are known as myeloid cells, and these cells are extremely important to the human body. Acute myelogenous leukemia is a disease that aggressively attacks these cells and turns them into cancerous cells. Since it is in its acute form, it tends to cause death in the patient very quickly.

How is acute myelogenous leukemia treated?

It is treated in virtually the same manner as all other forms of leukemia. There are a number of different chemotherapy drugs that doctors will try and use in order to achieve a remission. Doctors are not always successful in their use of chemotherapy to fight cancer, and remissions are rare with this type of cancer.

If the chemotherapy has shown no response, a doctor, in desperation, might resort to surgery. This is an extremely risky because of the weak state of the body, but at the same time, it might be the only recourse left. The doctor will perform invasive surgery on the patient in an attempt to remove the bulk of the cancerous cells from his or her body.

What causes acute myelogenous leukemia?

There are a number of different causes for acute myelogenous leukemia and all of them are common carcinogenic substances. One such carcinogen is the substance known as benzene. Benzene is easily recognizable because of the very sweet aroma it gives off. This property is shared by most substances that contain a benzene ring in their structure, and this is where the term “Aromatic” comes from in terms of these chemical substances. Benzene exposure usually either occurs at work or through ingestion of a contaminated object like water.

What should I do if I believe my illness was caused by negligent benzene exposure?
