A visit to the OBGYN is considered routine maintenance for all women, starting from when they reach child-bearing age until well after menopause. Due to the variety of different procedures preformed by a gynecologist, there are a growing number of problems that can result from OBGYN neglect.

Thrombosis is a condition that can occur from OBGYN negligence. Thrombosis is when a blood clot is formed inside the blood vessel, which can result in Venus Thrombosis. When a blood clot breaks off from the artery it was attached to and travels through the veins and into either the heart or lungs it is called Venus Thrombosis. This condition can, if not recognized or treated quickly, result in death. If a blood vessel travels through the heart and into the brain it can cause a stroke, which can cause paralysis or death.

One of the biggest risk factors in developing Thrombosis is taking oral contraceptives. If a doctor does not take an adequate family history and personal history, the likelihood of this occurring is very strong. People who have a family history of Thrombosis or those who smoke have a much higher chance of developing a blood clot while taking the contraceptive than those that do not.

An Intrauterine device, or IUD, is another popular form of birth control. Unlike oral contraceptives which require nothing more from a physician than writing a prescription, a doctor is directly responsible for inserting an IUD through the cervix and into a woman's uterus. If the physician who is inserting the IUD is not careful, it can easily perforate the uterine wall. This perforation may even go further into the abdominal cavity.

If surgery for a gynecological problem is necessary, there are a host of problems that can ensue from a careless physician including infection, injury to internal organs, hemorrhaging, or damage to the uterus that is so severe that an emergency hysterectomy may be needed. This, of course, will end any chance of conceiving, which may be an undesired outcome to the patient.

A number of problems can ensue from OBGYN care when pregnancy occurs. Physicians are responsible for not only the mother's care but for the baby as well. A failure to diagnose an ectopic pregnancy early enough can result in the rupture of the fallopian tube. The rupture causes internal bleeding and can lead to shock and in some cases, death.

Most birth injuries happen when the baby is traveling down the birth canal. Small birth canals or large babies may cause the infant to become lodged within the canal. Doctors may use forceps or a vacuum extractor to help pull the baby out of its mother's womb. If the baby is stuck in the uterus another way, such as having their shoulder lodged behind the pelvic bone, the doctor may have to use extreme force in order to get the baby out. It is during these difficult deliveries that nerve damage, brain damage, paralysis, or even fetal death can occur.
