Machinery Accidents
Introduction
There are a number of different types of accidents that can happen in the workplace and this is partially why there are so many different safety lessons that a person needs to take over the course of the training that they undergo for different jobs. Even a person that works in a place like a telephone call center will need to undergo safety training at some point in order to avoid the different safety pitfalls that exist in that job, and a worker that works a blue collar job like construction will have extensive safety training in order to make sure that he or she understands and is able to handle the different types of risks that are involved with that particular line of work.
The purpose of this article is to educate the reader on one specific type of accident that can happen in the workplace, and the rest of the article will be devoted to answering the most common questions that people have about this type of accident. The group of accidents being referred to are machinery accidents.
What is a machinery accident?
Machinery is used in most blue collar jobs. Even general laborers are likely to use machinery at some point during their working day (i.e. a forklift), and for that reason, it is very important that people are aware of the different things that could happen to them through the use of machinery. When the term machinery is used here it applies to things like saws, forklifts, lathes, and all other manner of mechanical devices that might be used in the course of completing one’s job.
The type of accident that might happen is largely dependant on the type of machinery being used. For example, a forklift operator might accidentally break too hard and cause some of the packages on the forklift to fall off. If a worker is walking by at the time, he or she might get hit by the object; this is an example of a machinery accident. If a person is using a lathe in order to carve a piece of wood into a table leg and accidentally gets his or her hair caught in the lathe this too is an example of a machinery accident.
Just as the type of accident is dependent on the type of machinery, so too is the injury that might be incurred. In the previous examples given there might be any number of injuries incurred from either of those two situations. Anything from a bad headache to a concussion or even possibly death if the impact is severe enough might occur; there are a number of possibilities (many of them serious), and this is why it is important to be aware of what can happen.
What can I do to prevent machinery accidents?
There are a number of things you can do to prevent machinery accidents from happening to you, and a number of those things involve common sense. When you are operating a machine like a lathe make sure to tie back your hair and not wear any loose clothing. Regardless of the machine that you eventually end up using, it is important to be alert at all times and to make sure that you are aware of the specific safety instructions that go with the specific machine that you are using.
What should I do if I am involved in a machinery accident?
Right from the time of the accident itself it is very important that you seek medical attention immediately. Inform your supervisor of the accident. Once your needs have been taken care of medically, and the accident has been dealt with then it is time to evaluate the reasons for the accident happening. Was it because of carelessness on your part, or was it because of unsafe working conditions to begin with?
If you believe that it might have been the result of unsafe working conditions then see if you can get those conditions changed. You might also want to contact a lawyer because a lawyer will be able to help you receive financial compensation for your injury.
