Introduction

There are a number of different accidents that can occur to a person in the course of his or her duty and because of this many different companies will drill their employees regularly on safety procedures and the general importance of safety in the workplace. These lessons are not without value as they are able to make the employees understand how safe practices within the workplace will positively affect their lives. The unfortunate part, however, is that most of these lessons are inadequate and are usually just a video highlighting some common sense practices that workers would be carrying out anyway.

The only true way to reduce the risk of accidents in the workplace is to understand how they come about. Once you are able to understand the different risk factors involved in accidents that happen, you will be able to tailor your working procedure in order to avoid these accidents. This article focuses on one specific group of accidents, trench accidents.

What are trench accidents?

There are a number of different times during a project that trenches might be used. The most common places to see trenches are either in construction or renovation projects. A number of wires corresponding to a number of different essentials in a building are at some point run underground, and when that takes places it is necessary to dig a trench in order to facilitate the running of those wires. Once the wires have been run then the trench is filled in and the project goes on to the next phase.

A trench accident occurs because of some sort of accident that happens within the trench itself. This could be anything really but the main point is that a number of trench accidents are possible if the trench itself was dug in a shaky manner, or the worker is careless when he or she is working around the trench itself.

The most common type of trench accident is when a worker either slips or falls into the trench. This can occur because of slippery ground above the trench or because of the carelessness of a fellow employee. Either way, this is the most common kind of accident and can frequently result in sprains and even clean breaks of bones if the trench is deep and the fall is awkward. Additionally, it is possible that workers could be electrocuted or burned by things like frayed wires, but these types of occurrences are less frequent than the falls.

What can I do to prevent trench accidents?

While you were probably not in charge of the trench construction, there are still things you can do in order to prevent any accidents from happening. Be very careful when you are around the trench, and this should be the case every single time you approach it. There is a tendency for human beings to treat risks less seriously when we have successfully faced them a number of times, and if you are constantly working in and out of a trench it is important that you fight this feeling.

Aside from that, always be careful around the wires as well. Because of their location inside a trench, it is very easy for wires to become damp and if any of them are frayed at all then there is a severe electrocution risk to any worker that is working near them. So once again, be careful around the wires and if you spot one that is frayed report it to your shift supervisor immediately.

What should I do if I am involved in a trench accident?

Once all of the medical aspects have been attended to then you should probably go see a lawyer especially if you suspect that the accident was not your fault but rather was due to negligence on the part of your employer. Whatever you decide to do, it is important to consult a lawyer early because he or she will be able to listen to your story and then give you advice on what action you should take next.
