National Child Abuse Law Attorneys Introduction:

Child abuse laws in the United States are primarily the responsibility of the state and local legislature. Each state has developed laws that define what constitutes an abusive act against a child. Maltreatment, abuse and neglect are all covered by the same set of definitive laws. These regulations determine when outside help should be mandated and what process a complaint must follow to result in judicial action.

Most cases are initially identified by a person outside of the family who recognizes the signs of abuse and reports them to the authorities. Teachers, physicians, and mental health practitioners are required by law to report an admission of abuse on a child. After a report is made it is usually investigated by a child protective agency to determine if the complaint is valid. Sometimes treatment is advocated, at other times the case is referred to the family court system. An attorney specializing in child abuse is imperative to any case that may go to trial. Whether the abuse originated with a family member or another adult that had contact with the child, these types of cases can be difficult to prove and even more difficult to bring to resolution.
