National Disability Law Attorneys Introduction:
Disability Law Attorneys deal with civil cases to help persons who are disabled collect owed payments from their employer, social security, or an insurance company in the event they become disabled due to an accident, injury, and/or illness, mental or physical. Their duties generally include helping with applications for benefits, filing lawsuits to recover benefits owed, and large lump sum buyouts for people receiving benefits.
Disability Law can also apply to criminal and civil lawsuits based on violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, which protects against discrimination of individuals who are disabled. This includes discriminating against disabled individuals for employment even if they are otherwise qualified for the job, use of public services including public transportation, and use of public accommodations and commercial facilities such as hotels and restaurants. A Disability Law Attorney may also be involved in a case to shape public policy in order to better the lives of disabled people.
Other cases a Disability Law Attorney will typically deal with are lawsuits involving abuse and/or neglect of disabled people. For example, they may file suit against a nursing home for disabled elderly individuals if there have been reports that the staff has been mistreating its patients.
