National Juvenile Law Attorneys Introduction:
Juvenile law attorneys have expertise in legal areas dealing with criminal law and custody involving juveniles. In most states, a juvenile criminal is anyone under the age of eighteen who has committed a crime. A juvenile crime is considered an act of delinquency requiring court intervention. Juvenile law attorneys specialize in the rules and procedures of juvenile courts, which are much different than that of adult courts.
Juvenile attorneys may work in either the private or government sectors. In the government sector, juvenile attorneys may work for a state attorney’s office, a public defender’s office, or a public guardian’s office. Juvenile attorneys may work as prosecutors in the areas of delinquency, domestic violence, or child protection. As a child’s legal representative, a juvenile attorney’s responsibility is to advocate for the child in the areas of custody, support, and risk of harm. If a juvenile attorney works for a public defender’s office, the attorney provides representation for criminal, abuse, neglect, and misdemeanor issues for those who can’t afford legal representation.
A juvenile defendant may retain a juvenile law attorney at any stage. If the defendant is found guilty of a juvenile law crime, he may be sent to a reform school, placed in a foster home, or placed on probation or house arrest.
