Man Gets Prison Sentence Over Copyright Infringement

A man has received a sentence of thirty months in prison after being found guilty of conspiracy to commit copyright infringement. Eli El has been sentenced to three years of supervision after he pleaded guilty to the charge in New Haven, Connecticut earlier this week.

El played a role in the distribution of twenty thousand software programs that were copyrighted. The programs were distributed via the Internet, using the Warez market, an underground community that uses the Internet to distribute copyrighted software.

A spokesman from the Business Software Alliance stated that the outcome of the case showed just how serious copyright infringement and piracy were. He stated: “The U.S. Department of Justice thinks it is serious, the rights holders think it’s serious, and they’ll spend the resources to stop piracy. Two-and-a-half years in jail is a significant sentence, and it’s a felony conviction that will follow El the rest of his life.”

He added: “Another thing about this defendan, he’s 40, and that’s another example that the people involved in piracy operations are not a bunch of kids in high school – he’s a grown man and causing significant damages.”
