Welding Accidents
Introduction
Welding is a very difficult trade to master. For most people, welding is an activity that they would do in the performance of some other type of work. Carpenters might have to weld at some point as might plumbers or pavers. There are a number of different forms of employment where welding becomes a very important tool and in order to take full advantage of welding people need to be aware of how to do it in a safe manner. People that weld unsafely are people that are risking accidents at some point down the road.
One of the steps towards welding safely is understanding all of the different risks that are involved with the act of welding. Once you are able to do this then you have the ability to change your technique and positioning in order to minimize the chances that one of the risk factors might end up causing a welding accident.
What are welding accidents?
Welding is something that a number of people do during the course of their jobs. It is the act of joining two pieces of metal together by causing them to coalesce. This basically means that parts of both metals are melted in order to allow the pieces to stick together. In order to melt part of a large piece of metal you need to apply a large amount of either pressure or temperature to it. In hand welding, it is usually temperature that is applied, and for that reason hand, welding torches are in common use in workplaces all over the world.
There are a number of different welding accidents that might happen, and the most common one is a burn caused by the high temperature of the welding torch. This is a very deceptive accident, however, because when people think of burns they think of small burns. Recall the welding torch has a very high temperature and a very wide spread and for this reason if a burn does happen it is likely going to be very serious.
What can I do to prevent welding accidents?
In order to prevent welding accidents, it is important that you take all of the recommended safety precautions. This includes wearing eye protection and preferably a full face shield if one is available. Wearing very thick gloves is also a good idea as is keeping the torch pointed away from you at all times. Additionally, when you are actually performing the welding, keep the angle such that there are as few errant emissions from the torch as possible.
What should I do if I am involved in a welding accident?
If you suspect that the welding accident might have been the result of negligence on the part of your employer then you should take all of the necessary steps in order to help yourself get a safer workplace environment for future projects.
