Lotronex, which is the brand name of the generic drug Alosteron, is used primarily to treat Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a functional bowel disorder that causes severe abdominal pain and bowel problems. Lotronex was approved for use in women by the Food and Drug Administration. In 2000, the Food and Drug Administration removed the drug from the market as a result of severe side effects. It has since been reintroduced, as a result of pressure by patients, although not as widely available and with restricted use.

The severe side effects that were blamed on Lotronex were severe and life-threatening gastrointestinal problems, such as life-threatening ischaemic colitis (which causes reduced blood flow to the colon) and severe constipation leading to obstruction or even death. The rate of ischaemic colitis was 1 in every 2000 patients, while the risk of severe constipation, and its resulting issues, occurred in 1 in every 1000 patients. It is easy to see why this drug was pulled from widespread usage, although it is still prescribed today.

If you are one of the few people that are presently prescribed Lotronex, it is important that you carefully monitor yourself for any symptoms like the ones described above. If you have severe constipation, you should talk to your doctor right away, before it becomes a serious and dire situation. Your doctor should carefully monitor you while you are taking this drug and you should not hesitate to ask your doctor to prescribe something else for you if you are worried about the side effects.

If you took Lotronex in the past and experienced ischaemic colitis or severe constipation which resulted in other medical problems, you should contact an attorney for an evaluation about a possible lawsuit against the manufacturer of Lotronex. The same goes for if you had a family member who died, and the likely cause was the consumption of Lotronex. Although the Food and Drug Administration approved the drug, it does not mean that the drug company cannot be held liable. An attorney can better explain to you the responsibilities of a drug manufacturer and under what circumstances they can be held liable for your illness. Depending on what the company knew about the risk factors, how well they informed the public, and whether they tried to hide any negative information about the drug will come into play when the attorney weighs whether or not you have a good case against the drug company.

When you speak with an attorney, be sure to take along all of your medical records, including those from before you began taking Lotronex. It is only through a thorough review of your medical history that the attorney will be able to properly evaluate your claim. The attorney has to be assured that your illness was caused by Lotronex and was not caused by something else or was a pre-existing condition that you had that was only after taking the drug.

After talking with you about your case, the attorney will then give you his or her honest opinion about whether or not you will have a good chance of success in a lawsuit. They will also explain to you the procedures involved in filing a lawsuit and how long it can be expected to take. Typically, all of this preliminary evaluation will be at no upfront cost to you. Additionally, the attorney will usually represent you with no upfront payment. You will probably sign an agreement with the attorney in which you agree to give them a certain percentage of any money that you recover from the drug manufacturer and he or she agrees to be a zealous advocate on your behalf and get the monetary damages to which you are entitled.

You have suffered greatly as a result of taking Lotronex, so contact an attorney about how to get the compensation you deserve.
