Charges Against R&B Star Tossed Out

Charges that had been made against R&B star Kelis have been tossed out by a Miami judge recently. She had been charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest after being arrested last year having been accused to interfering with a Miami Beach police operation. The star is now promising to sue the police.

After being cleared of the charges Kelis said that she was “thrilled that justice prevailed in the end.” She added that the arrest was down to “racial profiling”. She was arrested after an alleged incident in March of last year.

According to reports in March 2007 the singer ran towards two undercover officers posing as prostitutes and started shouting racial slurs at them, thus disrupting the police operation. She was with her rapper husband Nas at the time, and was booked for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

However, the judge said that the charges against the singer could not be substantiated, stating: “The only basis for granting her a judgment acquittal is if there’s no evidence whatsoever a jury could find her guilty. In this case…you can’t arrest someone for questioning police authority or protesting an action. She was engaged in a constitutionally protected right to protest this police action.”
