Could Hospital Infection Lawsuits Be The Next Big Thing?

An industry official, who is the chairman of the Committee to Reduce Infection Deaths, has expressed an opinion that hospital infection related lawsuits could be the next big thing, and that class action lawsuits in this field could overtake even asbestos related lawsuits over time.

She states that whilst in the past hospital related infections were often considered to be unavoidable because of the environment, it has now been claimed that the risk of hospital infections is often heightened due to lack of hygiene in hospital and amongst hospital staff.

One case that was used to highlight the problems was that of a James Klotz and his wife, who had filed a lawsuit against a heart surgeon, his group practice and St. Anthony’s Medical Center in St. Louis. They were awarded two and a half million dollars last month as a result of the incident.

Mr Klotz had been admitted to hospital following a heart attack, and was fitted with a pacemaker. However, he also contracted the drug resistant infection, MRSA, and as a result ended up losing his right leg, part of his foot, and his kidney, as well as his hearing.
