Lawsuit Filed Against SF Homeless Program

A non profit group has filed a lawsuit in relation to a San Francisco homeless program, stating that the program discriminates against disables people. The Berkeley group filed the lawsuit earlier this week against the San Francisco Care not Cash Program.

The city’s program has been accused of illegally preventing disabled people who received federal aid from accessing a number of services that form part of the program, such as use of the reservation system for beds in shelters.

However, the lawsuit has been described as frivolous by city officials, and one official said that the program is open to both able-bodied and disabled homeless people that are not receiving federal aid. However, officials from the Disability Rights Advocates state that most disabled people receive federal aid, which means that most are excluded from the program.

One official from the group said: “If you’re not in Care Not Cash, you can’t make a reservation for a bed and you’re thrown into this Byzantine system where every day you have to stand in line and try to find a bed. It becomes survival of the fittest, and disabled people lose and end up sleeping in alleys.”
