The Recording Industry Association of America has been accused of illegally spying and intimidating thousands of consumers across America in a lawsuit that has been filed by a woman in Oregon. The Class action lawsuit has been filed against the RIAA by Tanya Anderson, who claims that the spying and intimidation is a bid by the RIAA to crack down on piracy.

According to the lawsuit, the RIAA is violating federal and state racketeering laws. It also accuses the association, along with another company, of conspiring “to develop a massive threat and litigation enterprise targeting private citizens across the United States.”

The lawsuit, which was filed in mid-August in US District Court in Portland, also states that the association and company “have clogged and abused the federal courts for many years with factually baseless and fraudulent lawsuits.” This is because they have mis-identified people suspected of illegal downloads states the lawsuit.

Forty four year old Anderson claims that she was sent a letter accusing her of illegal downloads in 2005. The RIAA has not commented on the lawsuit other than to state that it intends to seek dismissal of the action.
