Class Action Lawsuit Filed Against Department Of Veteran Affairs

A class action lawsuit has recently been filed against the Department of Veteran Affairs, claiming that the department has not done enough to prevent suicide and provide care for those that have served in the United States armed forces. The class action goes to trial this week, having been filed by two non-profit organizations.

The two organizations, which represent military veterans, have claimed in the lawsuit that the department has not adequately addressed the rising issue of mental health problems amongst military veterans, most notably post-traumatic stress disorder. The trial will begin in San Francisco this coming week.

Lawyers for the department have said that the courts do not have the right to tell the department how to operate, adding that the VA has been dedicating more resources to dealing with issues faced by military veterans.

However, figures show that each day an average of eighteen military veterans kills themselves while under VA care. The lawsuit stated: “That failure to provide care is manifesting itself in an epidemic of suicides.”
