Seven Lawsuits Filed in Relation to the Republican National Convention

Although it has now been six months since the Republican National Convention the legal repercussions are still rife, with a recent report claiming that seven lawsuits have been filed against police in relation to the RNC. The lawsuits were filed by protestors last week in U.S. District Court in St. Paul.

The lawsuits claim that there was police misconduct during the RNC, and industry officials have said that there are many more lawsuits still to come in relation to this matter. The American Civil Liberties Union of Minnesota is said to be preparing a further twenty one lawsuits and lawyers from the National Lawyers Guild claim that a further one hundred people could be filing claims.

Joe Daly, a law professor at Hamline University, said: “I think there will be a lot of suits. I think it will be a long, drawn-out battle.” He added that at the centre of the lawsuits would be allegations that police officers violated the federal rights of protestors.

The man who filed the seven lawsuits, Ted Dooley, a St. Paul attorney, said that officials had put an ‘occupying army’ on the streets during the RNC. However, Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher said: “Mr. Dooley’s comments are ridiculous. The tenor of the law enforcement actions was dictated by the behavior of the anarchists on day one of the convention.”
