Government To Be Sued Over Polar Bear Listing

Posted:

The federal government is being sued by a conservative legal advocacy group over a decision to list the Polar bear as a threatened species. The Pacific Legal Foundation has stated that the decision to list the Polar bear as a threatened species could result in an increase in lawsuits being filed against any companies or industries connected to the warming of the bear’s habitat.

An attorney dealing with the case stated: “It allows activists to file lawsuits more easily based on claims that industrial activity will harm the species. Clearly, efforts need to be made to protect species, but the methods under which that is done shouldn’t put species before people.” He also went on to state that listing the Polar bear as endangered could actually have harmful effects for poor people and minorities, although no detail was provided with regards to how this was linked. He simply added: “When we file suit, we’ll have to provide more information on the impact of the polar bear listing on the clients.”

A number of officials from the State of Alaska also want to file a suit over the decision, as many fear that if the listing is changed then this could impact upon gas and oil development in the area.
