Purdue Pharma To Be Sued Over Oxycontin

A law firm in Halifax is planning to file a lawsuit against the pharmaceutical giant Purdue Pharma over its opium-based drug Oxycontin. The law firm, Wagner’s, has run an ad campaign asking those that have been prescribed the painkiller and believe that they have developed an addiction to it to contact the firm to become involved in the lawsuit.

A member of the law firm stated: “I’ve always had an interest in OxyContin because of the social harm and havoc it’s caused in many communities and Cape Breton has been one of those.” He added that he became even more interested in the matter after it was shown that employees from the pharmaceutical company had been lying with regards to dosage and addiction risks.

Oxycontin was introduced in the 1990s, and since this time has been at the center of controversy because of reported overdoses, abuse, and addiction. Executives from the drug company have to pay over six-hundred and thirty million dollars in fines after they claimed that the drug was less addictive than it really was.

The law firm further stated: “One physician had his privileges, in respect to prescribing prescriptions in Cape Breton, restricted for alleged over-prescribing of OxyContin. I felt somewhat supportive for the physician because of the allegations that have come out now.”
