Lawsuit Against LAPD Grows

A lawsuit against the Los Angeles Police continues to grow after more than one hundred and seventy people along with Immigrants rights groups decided to join the lawsuit. The lawsuit claims police officers brutalized protesters during a peaceful march which took place in early May of 2007.

The marchers and reporters at the march were mainly Hispanic and, according to reports, there is video footage that shows officers firing rubber bullets and beating the unarmed protesters. One man, aged seventy six, claims that he was beaten as he tried to help protesters to leave the park where the march took place.

One lawyer that is representing the plaintiffs in the lawsuit stated: “It’s OK for police to use force against people of color, and that’s part of the culture that has to change.” However, police officials state that the problem was sparked by ‘agitators’ that threw bottles and rocks at officers.

A hearing has now been scheduled for mid-October, when a US Judge will decide whether class action status can be granted to the lawsuit. This will allow others to also join the lawsuit.
