Two Bars Sued Over Smoking in Public Areas

Public Health has reportedly sued two bars for breaches with regards to smoking in public areas. The bars are the English George and Dragon, which is in Seattle, and also the Middle Eastern themed Zaina Café in Belltown. However, Public Health of Seattle and King County has filed a lawsuit against both bars this week with regards to alleged breaches in smoking regulations.

In 2005 a state smoking ban was brought in for bars and restaurants. The new law meant that people could not smoke with twenty five feet of doors and windows as well as not being able to smoke indoors. However, the two establishments are being accused of breaching the law, and the Zaina Café is accused of letting patrons smoke hookah in the courtyard.

One official from Public Health said: “These places have exhibited little or no sincerity with coming into compliance.” The lawsuit is looking to impose one hundred dollar per day fines against the bars until they are seen to come into compliance with the law.

According to the report one Public Health inspector went to the Zaina Café and was told by an employee, who offered to set up the water pipe for him, “We do hookah here, outside. I’m not going to lie.” The owner of the restaurant said: “I’m from the Middle East. Hookah is traditional. It’s all over. It’s a social event.”
